Huddersfield Constituency Labour Party News and views from Huddersfield Labour
Constituency Profile
Huddersfield has a proud history. Its early wealth came from the textile industry supported by the growing canal system. Huddersfield workers were heavily involved in the Luddite rebellions in 1811-1812. Now, Huddersfield employment includes Information Technology, the chemical industry and retail services. We have good schools and colleges and a University of renown. Sports fans are faithful to our Huddersfield Town football team and Huddersfield Giants Rugby League players. Indeed Rugby League was formed here in the George Hotel in the town centre in 1895.
We are fortunate to enjoy the legacy of attractive Victorian buildings around the town and to be surrounded by beautiful countryside.
Barry Sheerman has been our Labour and Co-operative Party MP since 1979. He has an active web site and you can catch up with what Barry has been doing here and at Parliament, as well as his lively tweets, from this site.
Our new Prospective Labour Candidate is Harpreet Uppal
The Labour Party is organised into five branches in the five electoral wards of Almondbury, Ashbrow, Dalton, Greenhead and Newsome. If the Parliamentary boundary changes are accepted we will also include Lindley.
Our wards and those from the constituencies of Dewsbury, Colne Valley and Batley and Spen comprise Kirklees Council. You can read about the doings of our nine Huddersfield councillors on this site. We aim to increase the number of Labour councillors and your help will be significant in making that happen.
We hold regular branch meetings and come together at monthly constituency management meetings where the focus is on political discussion, sharing views and planning campaigns to improve life here in Huddersfield and in the wider world. Members and supporters also meet up for regular socials where eating and drinking is definitely on the agenda, but where we can chat and chew over issues of the day. We have Labour values in common with a wide range of views as to how to promote them. Come and join us. Say hello via huddersfieldclp@gmail .com
