Nadeem Iqbal - Newsome
Your local campaigner, Nadeem Iqbal, is staying positive and working to help local people have their say, despite appalling and unprecedented government cuts to council funding.
Nadeem and his family are local to Newsome with a family business in the Ward. He also has a lot of experience as a volunteer with the Citizens Advice Bureau and as a Housing Adviser with Fusion Housing (formerly CHAS).
He hit the headlines late last year when he handed over a petition signed by more than 3,000 local residents to Kirklees Council, regarding the planned closure of the Community Contact and Resource Centre in Huddersfield. Nadeem said: “It is due to unfair and disproportionate government cuts that a reduction to such a vital service was proposed. What the Conservative government has imposed on Kirklees goes way beyond ‘efficiency savings’ and services have been and will be reduced or removed all together.”
Because of Tory government cuts, Kirklees is already spending 15% less since 2010 – £100 million per year. The budget for 2019/20 will be only £261 million – £165 million less than in 2010.
There is a clear and alarming north-south divide in the government’s cuts. If you live in Huddersfield you are now getting £60 less per family member in council services, per year. If you live in Oxfordshire you are getting £50 more per family member!
Lockwood resident Nadeem said: “Rather than complain about it I wanted to start a campaign, to raise awareness and try and get a better outcome. In tough times the job of a councillor is even more important and I believe I am up to the challenge. If elected I will work hard to make sure residents have their say and that council staff have the support they need to provide the very best services they can, for everyone.”
“I want to bring people together. Let’s campaign to keep the things we really need and be creative in replacing and reducing other services.”
Nadeem says,"I will put this experience at your service if elected. Much of my work is very similar to that of a Councillor, indeed I have often advised councillors through my job when they have needed specialist advice. My work brings me into contact every day with people suffering as a result of this Tory/Lib Dem government, and I am determined to do my part to stop this attack on vulnerable people."
Should you have a concern or a problem then Nadeem would be very glad to help. He is also working closely with our local Parliamentary candidate Barry Sheerman.
Nadeem's priorities include ;
- Being involved with local communities to improve life for everyone in Newsome
- Supporting local business and enterprise to provide more jobs and better services
- Working with other Labour councillors to improve roads and make them safer
