The Huddersfield 'Save our A&E' group has managed another excellent intervention.
MP Barry Sheerman posed critical questions and local Labour members and candidates were there in support. Almondbury councillor Judith Hughes and candidate Ken Lowe, Newsome candidate Nadeem Iqbal with Nasim and Linden, Lindley candidate Mohammed Fayoom, and from Golcar Stephan Jungnitz with Jeremy Cuss from Colne Valley CLP. Some of us got a seat inside, some of us shouted, 'Let us in!' with the several hundred people outside the stadium.
The 'Save our A&E' group are challenging the legal basis of the CCG's report and Barry is setting up a commission of experts to assess the report and offer a Plan B. He will be using social media to involve local people.
At the meeting, Barry asked why he had been told for months that A&E would be located in Huddersfield, only to be called to an emergency meeting which set out a complete change. 'Was this really a clinical or medical case?' he asked, 'or actually a financial case?'
'I am determined to do all I can to change this ridiculous plan', he said. 'It is perfectly possible to link passion and imagination with intelligence to come up with a Plan B that doesn't take a hospital and its A&E away from a major town like Huddersfield.'
Our local and national NHS are under attack. We need an even stronger force on the council and a change of government. It's not going to happen without some work. Can you help? Let us know here:
