Things that matter

We are arguing for a vote for Labour: for the many not the few.  This could hardly be more important. Come and volunteer a bit of time...

Despite some bright areas in the local and mayoral elections, we have to agree with Jeremy that those results on Thursday were disappointing.

We have just 5 weeks to make sure we and Barry Sheerman hold Huddersfield for Labour and that our constituency neighbours hold their seats and improve the Labour vote.

The Huddersfield 'Save our A&E' group has managed another excellent intervention.

MP Barry Sheerman posed critical questions and locaCCG_collage.jpgl Labour members and candidates were there in support.  Almondbury councillor Judith Hughes and candidate Ken Lowe, Newsome candidate Nadeem Iqbal with Nasim and Linden, Lindley candidate Mohammed Fayoom, and from Golcar Stephan Jungnitz with Jeremy Cuss from Colne Valley CLP. Some of us got a seat inside, some of us shouted, 'Let us in!' with the several hundred people outside the stadium.

The 'Save our A&E' group are challenging the legal basis of the CCG's report and Barry is setting up a commission of experts to assess the report and offer a Plan B.  He will be using social media to involve local people.

At the meeting, Barry asked why he had been told for months that A&E would be located in Huddersfield, only to be called to an emergency meeting which set out a complete change.  'Was this really a clinical or medical case?' he asked, 'or actually a financial case?'

'I am determined to do all I can to change this ridiculous  plan', he said.  'It is perfectly possible to link passion and imagination with intelligence to come up with a Plan B that doesn't  take a hospital and its A&E away from a major town like Huddersfield.'

Our local and national NHS are under attack. We need an even stronger force on the council and a change of government.  It's not going to happen without some work.  Can you help?  Let us know here:

Save HRI and A&E:  You may well have been one of the many Labour Party members joining the 'Hands off HRI' rally and march last Saturday.  The organisers did a good job - effective and convivial! We continue to support the campaign and branches are distributing leaflets to boost Barry's petition - signed  copies arrive back daily.  We will be boosting this during the local election campaigns.  Barry is furious about the Clinical Commissioning Group report and is working daily to put pressure on, and you can see a summary of what he's been up to here:  Barry Sheerman's A&E Campaign update.

This is a very serious issue and thousands of people in Huddersfield, Colne Valley, Kirklees and  Halifax are very, very angry.  It's not just a question of removing A&E from Huddersfield: the whole hospital is earmarked for demolition with a smaller unit built  across the road on Acre Mills.  The Huddersfield Examiner reports that  Calderdale and Huddersfield Foundation Trust pays £671,669 per year to Pennine Property Partnership LLP for the Acre Mills unit..   This is how the privatised future looks if we don't do something about it.

It is ridiculous that Huddersfield people have to lose the town's hospital and A&E because of  punitive costs incurred in a different town. It's a national NHS funding issue. (And David Cameron said he would sort out the Halifax PFI...)   We want the best health services for people in Huddersfield AND Halifax.  If you would like to get involved, reply to this email or send details via our volunteer page.

Cath Harris - National Merit Award

At our recent Labour social and fund-raiser, members were delighted to see Barry Sheerman MP present Cath Harris with her Merit Award from the Labour Party, signed by Jeremy Corbyn and Tom Watson.

Barry reminded everyone that Cath had been a member for over 35 years.  Only last year did Cath stand down as Kirklees councillor and Deputy Leader because of ill-health.  She had always been tireless in her support for Labour values, the labour movement and in all the many ways that she knows will make Huddersfield and Kirklees a better place for the people who live here.  All this work and experience enabled Cath to do what she is probably most proud of, which was to be lead on Children’s Services.

Barry recalled the great times he, and we, had had at election times at Cath's house  where busy activity, good food and laughs prevailed.  The best thing we should celebrate about Cath, he said, was love.  Cath's particular love for the people she knows and that generous love for her community which shines through what she stands for and what she does.
